Smith Madden Group
Story
Smith Madden has teamed with Harris HMC to design and build a unique Cubby House for this year's Cubby House Challenge, raising funds to help prevent youth homelessness.
Help us to make a difference by purchasing a raffle ticket online at www.cubbyhousechallenge.org.au or by bidding on our cubby house at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show live auction, Sunday April 1st at 3pm.
Thank you for supporting the Kids Under Cover Cubby House Challenge 2012. By doing so you are helping to prevent homelessness, changing the lives of young people and helping them to reach their full potential
A little about our design
Smith Madden’s design reflects the Kids Under Cover message; keeping young people connected to the home and encouraging strong inter-family relationships. Our design also embraces forming & nurturing the bonds of peer friendships. The space is age neutral, with a focus on tweens to teens – not the customary Cubby-user age bracket.
The form brings a sculptural element to the garden; a building block is deconstructed, manipulated, stacked, dissected and twisted in the essence of play.
The building block celebrates many aspects of childhood, family and community; for a child it is an object for creative play; as a symbol of the building blocks of family relationships and it also celebrates the most basic needs for shelter & personal space.
Timber building blocks are movable and create transient spaces to encourage interaction with family and friends; they may be stacked to form a fort wall; scattered as seating for a party; arrayed into an imaginary auditorium to view a child’s play; build a platform for a grand performance. Above all they encourage imagination on a large scale. A wall folds open to reveal the space to the environment; we imagine children performing a play; a garden wall disguises & insulates another aspect of the Cubby House, herbs add a sensory & educational element.
Timber and rope are timeless materials for building & playing. These materials will weather well with the elements, blending into the surrounding garden. Ropes support plant life, provide another element for play, hanging of blankets for a stage curtain, et cetera. Colour is introduced in wedges of tinted windows, providing glimpses of the garden from a comfortable reading nook.
This space is for a tween to grow into, to provide a haven and to evolve onto a personal space.

We have selected Perspex for feature windows inside a reading alcove to bring a bit of bright colour as a contrast to the natural textures on the outside. This will also allow beautiful coloured light to filter into the Cubby during the day, and provide a highlight at night.

Ropes are a predominant feature of our Cubby House, and we feel that Lightly's product is perfect for our design to bring this feature into the interior in a rather fun way. We're also keen on the fact that your products are largely Australian made (extra brownie points!).

Activity
Kids Under Cover
Being homeless can happen to anyone.
On any given night, there are more than 116,000 people experiencing homelessness in Australia and nearly half of these are under the age of 25.*
For more than 30 years, Kids Under Cover has been working to prevent youth homelessness.
We know that if young people are not properly supported when they first experience homelessness, they have a higher chance of becoming homeless in their adult lives. Around 40% of homeless adults were first homeless as young people.**
In our work, we focus on early identification and prevention of youth homelessness, creating a proactive rather than a reactive approach to this very complex issue. We do this by building homes and providing scholarships for homeless and at-risk young people.
